Hanging With Hilarie
Learn more about our cover girl and former cheerleader,
actress Hilarie Burton.

Coach's Corner

AC dished with Hilarie's varsity coach, Jan Develli, of Park View HS in Sterling, VA, who was thrilled to share her memories of the starlet. Here's what she had to say about Hilarie, in her own words: Watching Hilarie on "One Tree Hill" is cool because her character is pretty much how she was in high school, except that she wasn't quite the vixen that she plays on that show. But she was loud, spirited and an excellent cheerleader. Hilarie was definitely a leader. She was so looked up to and admired by the younger squads, always encouraging and very nice to them. When Hilarie and her two best friends were freshmen, the varsity squad snubbed them. So when they became seniors, they decided to make a major effort never to treat underclassmen that way. They did a great job of always being willing to assist, answer questions and talk to them to really make the younger girls feel a part of the team. Hilarie went out of her way to do that.

One of the greatest memories I have of Hilarie is from the bus rides to and from competitions and games. We really took some really long road trips places. She would sing "My favorite Things" (she loved Sound of Music) and songs from Annie to entertain us. She has a beautiful voice. It was her dream forever to go to New York and make it, so it was absolutely no surprise to me at all when she landed the MTV spot [on "TRL"]. What you see is what you get with Hilarie. There's no facade. She's still that hometown girl. She remembers her roots and the simple things. She was an absolute joy to coach.

HILARIE'S HITLIST
Just like her character Peyton on "One Tree Hill" music is a huge part of who Hilarie is. But you won't find any "TRL" pop albums in her CD collection. We asked Hilarie for the five fave artists and albums that she'd recommend find their spot in your CD case, and she delivered with an interesting mix just for AC readers. "A little bit of old, a little bit of new, an educational experience for all," she says of her hit list.

1. Elvis Presley, "30 #1 Hits" (Hil digs his Swedish hits, but this one's a bit easier to find on the store shelves.)

2. Elvis Costello, "The Very Best of Elvis Costello" ("I Want You" is by far one of the best songs ever written," she says.)

3. David Bowie, "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust" and "Aladdin Sane" ("You have to listen to the two albums together in a row," Hilarie says. "They're gonna make so much more sense when they're together.")

4. Tegan and Sara, "If It Was You"

5. Ben Kweller, "Sha Sha"
Pep Rally Pointers

My senior year was great because I did get the cheerleading squad and the drama department to unite," Hilarie says. "The drama department had the fog machine going, turned the lights down and brought in their sound equipment. They put on this awesome music." Hilarie and her team also borrowed props and spotlights and put on skits, all with the help of the drama department. "It was cool because the theater kids who wouldn't necessarily be into pep rallies were all of a sudden like, oh man, I did that lighting or I did the music. The kids who didn't care before were into it, and the football players and cheerleaders were appreciative like, wow, you guys are really cool."
