+ + + E!'s Kristin Veitch Interview with Hilarie >> 5.04.2006 (after One Tree Hill was announced the winner of E!'s Save Our Show Campaign 2006)

Kristin: Congratulations on winning this poll. I’m so impressed by your fans. You guys really blew every other show out of the water.
Hilarie: Really?! That’s so cool! I was lucky enough to get to do this mall tour where basically we would just travel to different cities and hang out with the fans, and meet thousands and thousands of them. It’s just good to get to talk to them for a split second and just see the different kinds of fans and see what kind of people are drawn to what characters on our show. We’re so isolated in Wilmington, so to be able to get out and really meet these people was weird. I had no idea how popular our show was.

K: And why do you think people are so devoted and loyal to this show?
H: I think because we do have such varied characters on our show, and it’s not extreme situations. It’s not a particular neighborhood. It’s not a particular economic class. It’s not a particular ethnicity or anything. You know, we just kind of represent everymen, and nobody’s really a good guy and nobody’s really a bad guy. So kids who watch the show can relate to at least one person, if not the entire group of friends as a whole. You know, I don’t even know why they’re so good to us. We feel so spoiled, because you know, when I worked at MTV for years, our whole thing was ‘All right, this show is really hot and moving on, what’s next?’ And our fans have stayed really devoted to us throughout the whole run, so it’s extraordinarily flattering.

K: Are you hoping to come back for another season?
H: Yeah, I am. I love my life in Wilmington, and I love working on the show, and I really love my character, and I like that we’re ending the season with her being a little bit controversial and I would really hate to see the story end at that, you know?

K: What’s the question that everybody will be asking after the season finale?
H: Peyton has always been the character that everybody else comes to with their problems and she’s kind of shouldered everybody else’s burden, and she’s had all this burden of her own. And her best friend really hasn’t been a very good friend, and she’s in love with her best friend’s boyfriend as has been trying to direct her attentions elsewhere to kind of get it out of her head, and I think with the season finale, Peyton’s just like ‘Screw it, dude! This is my time.’ So I think that’s going to be really fun! So hopefully it will come back. I want her to cause some trouble, ‘cause God knows when I was seventeen, I was causin’ sh*t left and right. You know, that’s what you do! ‘Cause consequences aren’t nearly as big as they are when you get older, and so if you’re going to go ahead and mess things up, do it senior year in high school. I’m all about it!

K: My thing is, yes, Lucas is good looking but is there no other guy for these girls to be attracted to?!
H: Yeah, it’s survival of the fittest. You know, Peyton had dibs, and she gave it up, and all I’m sayin’ is I want my ball back. I gave it to you to play with for ten minutes, now give me my ball back!
